“The Fulfillment of Desire” by Richard Rodriguez is a story within a story. Rodriguez sees in the fourteen-year-old girl, the only person who pays attention to what he says, the only person who grasps his every word, whose eyes shine with enthusiasm and ambition, the boy who made formerly the same things. to his teachers. His parents were not interested in his education and the language barrier was just one of the many obstacles that stood between him and his parents. Once a student, Rodriguez began living two different lives in two very different worlds. This difference manifests itself mainly through the different mentalities, those of his teachers and his parents. Once he entered that class, Rodriguez's models became his teachers. He came to idolize them. He spent more time with them than with his parents. He talked more to his classmates than to his family. Rodriguez successfully completes the rhetorical tasks through the author's effective use of appeal to emotion and other rhetorical devices in showing the changes Rodriguez has made because he has dedicated himself to the school . Rodriguez is present in two different ways in his essay; the schoolboy Rodriguez, totally immersed in the education system, is the perfect example of the “scholarship boy”. He sets precise limits between school and home but is unable to balance the two because he gives more importance to the educational aspect than to socializing with his family and friends, "the balance is lost” (217). In fact, he rarely talks about his social life and his friends because he has no time for them. This passage appeals to the reader's emotion because the author manages to successfully integrate the separation that Rodriguez is in the middle of paper......with the "education" he is told. And the effect of education really transformed him to become what he is today, that is, an educated person, separated from his original culture and family. The figure of the stock marketer is very intriguing. I personally believe that a fellow in our time would be very different from a fellow in the era of Hoggart and even Rodriguez. Rodriguez's lack of personal reflection makes him delve into educational issues with a different meaning. This is proven by the fact that he does not create his own opinion on things but imitates and reproduces what he learns. Rodriguez has changed considerably from the boy he used to be.
