  • Essay / Reflecting on What I Learned in My Education Class

    The first week of this unit I had a mix of emotions, excitement and stress. The topics covered each week gave me the opportunity to deepen my knowledge in many areas. My interest in teaching when I started this course has now transformed into an interest in learning as well. Reflecting on my education as a child has shown me the growth of teaching and our current education system. Professionalism was a great way to start the unit; this subject gave me the opportunity to understand the responsibilities that teachers have towards students and their parents. When I started this topic, I thought professionalism was about ethics and teacher behavior in and out of the classroom. However, while this remains relevant, I must now include engagement with learners. Courses and professional development days are offered to teachers, so the new knowledge acquired can be used in their classroom. Being able to make informed decisions and conduct self-assessments is essential to supporting learners in today's classrooms. (E&K, 2010). Social cognitive theory focuses on changes in behavior resulting from observing others. However, to expect good behavior from students, we as educators must model correct behavior inside and outside of the classroom. (Bandura, 1986, 1997, 2001 cited in E&K, 2010pg, 179). The video clip Children See, Children Do is a powerful video that clearly shows the importance of how inappropriate behavior is modeled by children. Creating a safe and welcoming environment for children is essential to providing them with positive feelings about learning. (E&K, 2010, page 166). Children's needs...... middle of sheet ...... adapt the work according to the child's needs and identify students who may need additional help in class. Student assessment can be formal and informal and is a good way to check their understanding of the topics covered. These assessments should reflect what students know and what they can do. National tests in Australia test children in years 3, 5, 7 and 9. These tests are a good indicator of student performance in specific skill areas of the curriculum. Teaching is becoming more interactive with the introduction of smart boards, smart desks, laptops and other technologies. . With numerous resources at your fingertips, teachers, students and parents can stay up to date with current information. Software like Study Wiz facilitates interactions between home and school to keep parents informed of their child's progress. The future is here.
