  • Essay / Why do left-wing Christians reject the market economy?

Ken S. Ewert's “Moral Critiques of the Market” analyzes how left-wing Christians are not supporters of the economic system of a “free market economy.” A free market economy is one in which citizens, partnerships, or businesses have the ability to trade freely with others based on the supply and demand of products. This allows for free competition and choice within an economic system. One of the main themes that Ewert tries to state is that Christians should not oppose the free market system in its entirety. Ewert has many valid points that I would agree with. He believes that although the market economy opposes the beliefs of some Christians, it should not deter Christians from participating in this system. One of the main points I agree with is Ewert's statement: "It is clear that every directed action is necessarily a selfish action." » This is a strong statement that has great validity. Self-directed action does not mean it is a selfish act. An example might be a person purchasing products for themselves in a free market economy. The person must purchase essential materials to survive, such as food, clothing and shelter. The supplier on the other end must have this person to make a profit. In reality, the system is more codependent than selfish. To avoid sowing confusion, some people abuse their power within the economic system by establishing monopolies or allowing certain groups to be discriminated against in order to make profits. These are cases that happen. A company that is known for this Wal-Mart, a multi-billion dollar company that is known for making small businesses suffer because their prices are much lower, with subpar health insurance...... middle paper... ...to receive products, there must be some type of personal interaction. An example would be charity. This is related to the market economy and simply does not involve monetary funds. This therefore does not mean that impersonal relationships will be established. In conclusion, Ewert explains why left-wing Christians should not be concerned that free market economics is detrimental to a person's morals and ethics and possibly their religion. The free market economy allows choice. The environment is not an excuse that left-wing Christians use to argue that the market economy corrupts human morality. From a biblical perspective, it is up to the person to allow themselves to not be corrupted morally and spiritually, not their environment or, in this case, their economy. Left-wing Christians, however, have good motivations to omit an entire system simply because it has certain negative aspects..
