Essay / What is aesthetics? - 1418
When questioning something as controversial as the possibility of an aesthetic standard of judgment, one must consider the many different perspectives that already exist on the issue. For centuries, some of the greatest philosophers such as David Hume and Immanuel Kant have attempted to answer this timeless question. However, understandings and interpretations of art are constantly evolving. It is therefore difficult to find a clear and concise answer. Throughout this essay, I will discuss previous opinions and beliefs on the subject, focusing primarily on the ideas of the philosopher David Hume, then addressing Noel Carroll's critique of Hume's philosophy, and then delving into my own analysis of the question. One of the most influential philosophers on aesthetics was the scholar David Hume. Hume wrote his most important work on aesthetics, Of The Standard of Taste, in 1757. This written work still has great influence among scholars today and provides a knowledge base for understanding the concepts of aesthetics and of aesthetic judgment. According to Hume, there can and is a standard of aesthetic judgment, but there is a certain paradoxical subjectivity when taste is involved. There is some contradiction between what we know to be good art and what we know that the field of aesthetics is very subjective in nature. One of Hume's main concepts in his theory of aesthetics is the emotion of approval. Hume believes that what makes a work of art attractive to the viewer is the feeling of approval it gives him. Furthermore, approval can be defined as a pleasant feeling of admiration and rightness which is a spontaneous reaction that happens to you when ...... middle of paper ...... however, the information that he offers as evidence may not be as resilient as one might initially assume. Some sections of Hume's theory are very successful in developing evolutionary ideas on the subject of aesthetics, but nevertheless, Noel Carroll also gives valid counterarguments that challenge Hume's original thoughts. In conclusion, I believe that while there may be possible critiques capable of providing a semi-accurate judgment on aesthetics, ultimately every human being's perception is, if only so much or little, able to provide a definitive standard of aesthetics. judgment because art and aesthetics are a largely subjective field.
