Essay / Eating Disorder Case Study: Chhaya - 1836
Chhaya is a high school student whose issues with personal identity began as a child with her mixed ethnicity. She blames her parents' constant arguments (and threats of divorce) on her own behavior and, in turn, strives to become the perfect daughter. Chhaya consequently throws herself into her homework where she repeatedly increases her goals despite the lack of disapproval from others. Social relationships and leisure activities are pushed aside because Chhaya feels guilty whenever she experiences pleasure in non-focused activities. Although Chhaya apparently tried to control many aspects of her life, this tendency developed into an eating disorder, anorexia nervosa, after two major life events: discovering that she did not have received from major and the relationship with her first male interest ended. These events occurred within a month of each other at the end of Chhaya's junior year in high school. Besides her plummeting self-esteem and confidence, Chhaya also felt worthless and out of control of her life. When she discovered that she was very good at losing weight, she began to restrict her diet to the extreme. She was hospitalized and is currently receiving occupational therapy at Children's Hospital. To learn more about Chhaya's roles, expectations, occupations, and the effect of these aspects of life on her eating disorder, the occupational therapist used the Adolescent Role Assessment ( Black, 1976) to interview Chhaya. This assessment is intended for clients ages 13 to 17 and has shown sufficient internal consistency reliability (0.75), test-retest reliability (0.91), and content validity (via a literature review on multiple areas of study) (Burke & Lomba, 200...... middle of article ......onal Therapy 2nd ed.
