  • Essay / Taylor's Principles of Management - 1474

In the 21st century, management has been considered both an art and a science (Reh, 2010). It is an art because it helps people to be more innovative, creative and efficient in doing their jobs, compared to the times when people did their jobs without applying management knowledge. Likewise, management can be considered a science in the way managers will be able to manage people and help them to be more involved and more effective. The term manager here refers to the person responsible for planning and directing the work of a group of individuals, monitoring their work and taking corrective action when necessary (Robbins, Bergman, Stagg & Coulter, 2008 ). Taylor's four principles have been used in many areas of management over the past several decades and there is evidence that Taylor's principles have advanced management work, business, and education (Wren, 1994). However, Taylor's principles that have been used over the past decade are being questioned whether they are still feasible and suitable for our times or not (Carrol & Gillen, 1987, P. 38). The purpose of this essay is to see if Taylor's four principles are still applied in the 21st century and if they can be used successfully even in a business or non-profit organization such as a government department. Interviews and research have been done and they clarify that Taylor's principle is still used in this particular era, even if it is a non-profit organization such as the government.
