Essay / What I learned from ELL teachers while pursuing my ELL...
As I pursued my ELL endorsement, I found it very beneficial to interview current ELL teachers. They shared their knowledge and expertise in this area. I interviewed the middle school ELL teacher in my school, an upper elementary ELL teacher, and an elementary school teacher in my district. I asked twelve questions regarding their experience teaching ELL. These responses are valuable to prospective ELL teachers and general education teachers who teach ELL in their classrooms. I found it interesting that of the three ELL teachers interviewed, only one had personal experience with ELL. This professor teaches in my college. She came here from Poland when she was nine years old. She didn't know any English other than basic words like colors and days of the week. This personal experience can help her immensely because she understands her students' experience and they can relate to her. This teacher is the only bilingual of the three I interviewed. Interestingly, these are also two of the three first-year teachers who teach ELL. Both of these educators were program assistants prior to taking on this teaching position and they both received their approval from the IRC. The other elementary school teacher has been teaching ELL for twenty years and has a lot of experience. I was interested in how ELL teachers interact with their students from diverse backgrounds and cultures. Everyone said they were trying to get to know the students’ culture. The teachers all thought it was important to make a connection. They suggested showing interest in the student's native language and home life, or asking them to share language, holiday traditions, and food. ELL teachers can also try to incorporate different cultures to enrich their lessons. I was in the middle of a paper...... An elementary school teacher notices huge improvements in her young students. She sees how they gain confidence and language and thanks to her, they participate and speak more in class. The upper elementary ELL teacher knows that these students need a lot of support. She feels like she's really making an impact. Her former students occasionally contact her to inform her of their situation. Teaching ELL students can be a difficult role, but it is important. I realize how dedicated these teachers are to their students. I also realize how important proper training is for the teacher and I believe I will be better prepared with the courses I take. Although teaching ELL can be difficult, it is a very rewarding experience. I look forward to helping ELL students in my own classroom and can use the information from this survey to continue to support their growth..
