Olympe de Gouges was one of the most radical, militant and rebellious women of the French Revolution. She is perhaps one of the most notable women of the French Revolution. Unfortunately, Olympe De Gouges is also one of the most little-known and forgotten historical figures of this era. In the 18th century, men believed that women did not have the ability or intellect to participate fully in public affairs like men. However, women like de Gouge found a way to participate. Olympe de Gouges found a way to express her political convictions through writing. De Gouges is an example of a woman who challenged gender limitations in the 18th century through writing. De Gouges dedicated her life to her political convictions by working for the representation and full political participation of women in the Republic. De Gouges was born in the south of France, in 1748, and her original name was Marie Gouze (whoislog.info). She is the daughter of Pierre Gouze, butcher, and Anne Olympe Moisset, servant and maid. It is said that his mother had an affair with a person of high social rank, the Marquis Lefranc de Pompignan. Some claim that Marquis was Gouges' real father. However, this cannot be proven (findbiography.org). Olympe de Gouges married very young and had a son. However, the marriage was short-lived and ended after her husband's death (britannica.com). After the death of her husband, she wanted to become a playwright and moved to Paris to realize her dream. De Gouges went to Paris in 1770 to pursue him. She then changed her name. She chose Olympe de Gouges. She chose this because it is a simple variation of her mother and father's names (dadalos.org).
