  • Essay / Why handwriting is more important than typing

A study by Virginia Berninger, a professor of educational psychology at the University of Washington, compared students who took notes by hand to their peers class who took notes by computer. Its findings indicated that “writers demonstrated a better understanding of content and were more attentive and engaged during class discussions.” Indeed, “handwriting involves more complex motor functions and takes a little more time than typing on a keyboard.” Still, handwriting is not necessary and time consuming. “With today's already overcrowded primary school curriculum and emphasis on teaching reading and math, there are simply more important subjects that need to be taught, including typing. keyboard” (Kysilko). Additionally, handwriting does not prepare students to be college and career ready like handwriting does.
