Essay / Tangled - 960
In the 21st century fairy tale Tangled, the film “Tangled” depicts the troubled life of a teenage girl raised by a woman who is not her mother. Rapunzel is kidnapped from her cradle as a child by an evil witch, Gothel, for the sole purpose of using her magical hair to enhance her beauty and make her young again. As Rapunzel ages, she soon wants to be released into a world she has yet to see. Gothel, who kidnapped Rapunzel for her own selfish needs, persistently demonstrates poor parenting throughout the film, Gothel demonstrates narcissistic behavior towards Rapunzel. When they both stand in front of the mirror, Gothel says, “Look in this mirror. I see a strong and confident young woman. Oh and look, you're here too! Gothel attends to her own wants and needs, neglecting Rapunzel's desires. The adolescent stage of life is a time when adolescents need to find personal identity and self-esteem. Receiving positive reinforcement and encouragement from parents allows a teenager to discover who they want to be in life and gives them a sense of direction. According to Erik Erikson's developmental theory, this is important to the process of forming a strong identity. (Kroger, 2006) Rapunzel has no sense of self while she is constantly belittled by what she thinks is her “mother”. She often receives more criticism than compliments. The type of parenting Gothel offers is authoritarian and also slightly neglectful. She demonstrates a very demanding personality without being reactive. Without reacting, she often leaves Rapunzel alone in her tower with her own thoughts, leading her to befriend a small gecko. A child with this type of parenting......middle of paper......children who seem helpful and educational. Learning systems like Leap Frog or educational TV programs are also a hot topic when it comes to giving your child a boost in the educational department. Since it's still "media", the question is: how much of it is really useful and how much is too much? (Garrison & Christakis, 2005) Many researchers suggest that these educational programs have no negative effects. However, it may not be the education department that will fail these children. It has been found that more children preoccupied with media, even educational media, are more likely to become obese, lack social skills and be less creative. There are pros and cons to every situation that happens in life. When it comes to a child's development, balance is ultimately what needs to be achieved in order to live a healthy lifestyle..
