Essay / A longer life: discover the secrets of aging
A fact of lifeAging is a fact of life: we are born young to die old. But even if some are lucky enough to live to be a hundred or more, where does that leave the rest of us? Indeed, we agree that the lifespan of the “average” human is much lower. But what if someone told you that you are capable of extending your life expectancy? According to a scientist, this will soon be possible. Robyn Williams visited the University of London to interview Matthew Piper, a postdoctoral researcher at the university, about his research into the mechanisms of aging; what factors affect the lifespan of an organism; and what he has generally discovered so far about healthy aging. As a result, his research has uncovered remarkable facts about how to live longer, uncovering “the secrets of aging.” Piper's experiments involve manipulating environmental and genetic signals in fly models to see how it changes their lifespan. Easier to say, what Dr. Piper does is expose the flies to a variety of different conditions....
