  • Essay / The Marshall Court - 1506

The life of every American citizen, whether they realize it or not, is influenced by a single entity: the Supreme Court of the United States. This part of the government ensures that the freedoms of the American people are protected by overseeing laws passed by Congress and actions taken by the president. Although the judiciary developed later than its counterparts, many of the powers exercised by the Supreme Court took years of deliberation to perfect. In the early years of the Supreme Court, one man's judgment influenced the powers of the court systems for years to come. In one of the most memorable legal cases of all time – Marbury v. Madison – Marshall established the idea of judicial review and strengthened the power of the judiciary in government. True to his Federalist ideals, Marshall ruled on cases that would explicitly limit the power of the state government and expand the forces of the national government. Finally, the Marshall Court was infamous for determining the outcomes of cases dealing with the interpretation of the Constitution and the importance of contracts in American society. The Marshall Court, in just three decades, has managed to influence the life of every American citizen, even today, by influencing the development of the judiciary, establishing a boundary between the state and the national government, and making declarations on the sanctity of contracts ("The Marshall Court"... middle of document......
