Essay / The art of montage and the meaning of cinema - 1574
As one of the most famous and well-known Soviet directors, Sergei Eisenstein wrote theoretical writings and used practical montage for acting crucial in the development of cinema. He viewed the art form of cinema as a tool for inflicting certain reactions and emotions on audiences, whether through shock or empathetic understanding. His editing techniques were key elements in achieving these effects, carefully planned and seeking to create a conflict of meaning. “Art is not a mirror that reflects the historical struggle, but a weapon of this struggle. » (Vertov in Enzensberger, 1972) His passionate editing work proved the propagandistic potential of cinema and was used as such to incite the masses to oppose the Soviet bourgeoisie. Therefore, not only did he demonstrate that editing is the essence of cinema, but that its application in a certain way has the ability to change history. To illustrate the power and effect of editing in film, Tarantino's independent hit Pulp Fiction (1994) will serve this purpose by analyzing its non-linear structure and subversive bending of genre rules. If for Eisenstein art is always conflict and his montage is meant to challenge viewers intellectually and emotionally through metaphors, Tarantino simply uses montage to play with narrative liberties. and excite stylistically. "Although the 'marginality' of American independent cinema has economic and other industrial causes and effects, it is also seen to arise from the differences that distinguish independent from mainstream product [...] working with more daring films. and/or controversial topics, very often marked by distinctive styles of camerawork, editing or narrative organization.
