Essay / Tour of Twin Towers Correctional Facility - 1854
Tour of Twin Towers Correctional Facility was a great experience. I had the opportunity to get a brief glimpse of what inmates with mental illness experience in prison on a daily basis. These inmates are primarily grouped according to the severity of the crime they committed, the severity of their mental illness, and their sexuality. The visit took place in one of the twin towers, which has seven floors and each floor houses different levels of inmates. Inmates with the most serious mental illnesses, who have no free time, are housed on the seventh floor. Inmates most frequently throw “gas,” which are any form of bodily fluids/solids, at staff. Examples of typical gases are feces, urine and blood. As the floors go lower, the level of danger inmates pose to themselves and/or others decreases. Once inmates are placed on a certain floor, they have the option to move down a floor based on their cooperation with staff and whether their mental illness appears to be under control. Psychiatrists evaluate each inmate as soon as they enter the establishment and are able to note their progress. Some inmates never leave the facility even though they have served time for the crime they committed. These inmates are too mentally ill to be released into the outside world. Additionally, inmates wear different colored clothing, which allows jailers to know how to behave around different inmates. Some are more dangerous than others; therefore, a jailer must be more careful with some inmates than others. Additionally, some inmates don't wear clothes because they are on suicide watch, so they only wear a blue suicide vest. To begin with, inmates wear different colored clothing depending on the seriousness of the crime they committed and the severity.... middle of sheet......assist an inmate or fellow jailer when they need help. Safety is a priority. Psychiatrists are there to diagnose and treat prisoners as best as possible. They make up a large part of the installation. Furthermore, there are politics in this prison like in any other prison. Not all units or floors have a policy, but if the floor or unit does, then the inmates must follow it or they will be beaten by the rest of the inmates. Inmates like homosexuals and child molesters are given special housing because the system knows that if they are left with the general prison population then they will be vulnerable. Last but not least, the cylinder type design of the prison is very convenient to monitor all the inmates from the control room. The goal is to be able to have an eye on all inmates at all times; therefore, ensuring control and safety of the installation.
