  • Essay / Battlestar Galactica - 547

Battlestar Galactica is a story of betrayal for those who created the cylons. The story is a classic scenario in which man creates a machine and the machine turns around and destroys the man. Battlestar strongly shows a subtext of anger that is distributed by the people through the government. The episode shows great emotion and intensity among the main characters throwing power into the dramatic mix. The characters in Battlestar Galactica show the state in which humanity reacts at the time of a great defeat. This is immediately evident when the Secretary of Education takes the presidential oath of office. She reacts almost instantly by issuing commands in all directions. She believes that whatever she says is the right way to respond and therefore communism is considered the new form of government. Other guests on the ship disagree with her, as well as the captain of the Battlestar Galactica who perceives her as not knowing what she is doing. The distress caused by the new President and the Captain creates its own mini-war in part because the President refuses to budge while the Captain doesn't seem to care what she thinks. This essentially divides the government between civilians and soldiers. The civilians, the rest of the human race, are sent to fend for themselves because the soldiers want to wage war even though the war is said to be lost. This controversy is what creates war throughout the empire. The fights between the President and the Captain both have good and valid points, but lack compassion for the opposing side. Ethically, the President was right to want to save everyone who was left and she fought well while trying to save everyone. However, she lost the ground when she started...... middle of paper ......k today. They seemed to leave out what was best for the people. The president had the right idea, but she cared more about saving people than thinking about an exit strategy. Still, the captain had ideas but didn't care about people's actual safety. This topic not only creates controversy in the series, but also points back to the real world and the controversy between whether our government is actually there to help us or if they are just there with their own selfish goals. The story of Battlestar Galactica is a deeply intriguing and subtextual story filled with betrayal and fear. The series addresses ethics and the weaknesses and strengths a government can have when thrust into an unknown situation with unknown consequences. Battlestar Galactica shows humanity's flaws and can show us, as humans, how to overcome some of those flaws.
