Essay / The outbreak of the First World War - 1156
The outbreak of the First World WarOn August 1, 1914, the First World War, also known as the Great War, began. The main countries concerned were: Germany, Italy, Austria-Hungary, Great Britain, France and Russia. The First World War ended on November 11, 1918 at 11 a.m. In 1919, Lloyd George of England, Orlando of Italy, Clemenceau of France, and Woodrow Wilson of the United States met to discuss how Germany should pay for the damage caused by World War I. They decided to create the Treaty of Versailles. There were a total of 440 clauses. The first 26 clauses dealt with the creation of the League of Nations. The remaining 414 clauses spelled out Germany's punishment. This gives the impression that Germany is 100% responsible for the war. – But was that really the case? This is what I will explain in my essay. There are many reasons that suggest that Germany was responsible for the First World War. The tension in Europe, caused by Germany, really began after the Franco-Prussian War (1870-1871), when the German army attacked France. The Germans won this short war. As a “prize”, they took the regions of Alsace and Lorraine from France. Alsace Lorraine was a province close to the German border and there was little point in them taking it, only so that Germany would have more land. The Germans claimed that the country was legitimately German; However, the majority of people living here were French. The French were very unhappy and wanted their land back. This caused the French to no longer trust Germany and tensions began between the two countries. Another contributing factor to the war was the build-up of tensions between Britain and Germany following the German question "To what extent was Germany responsible for the First World War?" » is difficult to answer. It is widely believed that this war was provoked by Germany. Germany was responsible for many earlier causes, but there are many other reasons that led to this war, some dating back to the late 1800s. The main factors were nationalism, militarism, colonialism, and the system of alliances. The alliance system was one of the important factors that contributed to the war. It appeared only due to several other factors and did not cause the war on its own. So I think that Germany was not the only one responsible for the First World War, but that there were many other factors. I also think the war happened because many countries felt the need to expand, thus causing a major power struggle. A war cannot be created out of nothing.
