    What do you think of when you hear the words American Gothic? If you've been thinking about death, heartbreak, loneliness, then you're right. The period of writing American Gothic was when people decided to write about the other side of happy endings. the heart breaking, the funeral and the thought of being alone forever. They tell you about the reality of things and the truth, about how things really happened and it doesn't sugarcoat anything. In "A Rose for Emily", Emily becomes a sad and depressed person who will do something completely unexpected. In “The Lottery,” the townspeople have a twisted tradition that takes place once a year. These two stories feature a lot of comparisons and contrasts in theme, foreshadowing, and imagery. “The Lottery” and “A Rose for Emily” are both American Gothic style, they focus more on the dark side of life.
