Essay / Enduring Love in Shakespeare - 1129
“So it’s not going to be easy. It's going to be really hard. We're going to have to work at it every day, but I want to do it because I want you. I want you all, forever, you and me, every day” (Sparks). Being in a relationship is difficult these days, and apparently, couples of old still went through the same types of situations that couples do today. Everyone has their disagreements and couples never know what life has in store for them. After being with someone for so long, you're bound to have a few arguments, but true love perseveres. Reading William Shakespeare's "Marriage of True Minds" and listening to Jason Mraz's "I Shall Not Give Up," readers and listeners discover time and time again that love can survive anything. Both the poem and the song represent the same idea and theme that true love is hard. While "I Won't Give Up" focuses more on what he will do for her and why he does it, "Marriage of True Minds" explains every aspect of what love really is or should be. Even though Shakespeare's sonnet 116, "Marriage of True Minds" was published in 1609, one can still find many songs that closely resemble the poem. In Jason Mraz's song, "I Won't Give Up", the same theme of tough love is presented in both tracks, followed by a few other smaller similarities that have the same idea. The first similarity between the two is that love should not stop when two are not together. In “Marriage of True Minds,” Shakespeare gives readers the following lines: “Love changes not with its brief hours and weeks” (Shakespeare 892). These lines mean that love does not change over time but grows stronger with every second. No matter how long you've been apart, it shouldn't compare to all the time you spent together, and the ...... middle of paper ...... girl what he will do for her recover, Shakespeare knows exactly what love is. , and even tells us at the end that if he is wrong, it is because he never wrote anything precise and that no man has ever loved. While Shakespeare seems so sure of himself, Mraz has doubts. Readers and listeners can learn from the poem and song that love has always been the same. From over 400 years ago to today, we know for sure that love must be tough. Works cited by Aristotle. “Love is quotes.” BrainyQuote. Xplore and Web. March 18, 2014.Mraz, Jason. "I won't give up."
