Essay / Mythology - 649
I believe that mythology should still be taught in schools, although with less emphasis and in more cultures. Myths are important elements of literature and have a different complexity than normal novels. Additionally, myths provide information about the culture of their time, as well as how people lived and what they believed. Along the same lines, I think the myths of other cultures should also be taught, because they also teach about the people of their time. Mythology is an important form of literature that has existed for thousands of years. For example, “stories contain so much complexity and ambiguity that they engage young people in a much more interesting way than simple morality tales” (Worley). Teaching mythology is just as important as other stories. They constitute a form of literature, just like a poem or a novel, and must be treated as such. Also: “Myths continue to fascinate us, even when they come from long ago and far away” (Kromholz). People love reading myths of all kinds because they give us a new perspective on how things happen. Myths are interesting and an integral part of literature. Ancient cultures and ways of life can also be explained using myths. For example, “Homer’s work is full of big questions, including: the legitimacy of war; moral dilemmas (Scylla and Charybdis); moral relativism (the Lestrygonians and the Ciconians); the nature of love (Kalypso); the value of happiness (the Lotus Eaters and Circe) and personal identity (the Phaeacians)” (Worley). The Greeks' way of thinking was rooted in the myths they wrote. Their culture and lifestyles are shown through these stories. The Greeks had values that were reflected in their novels, some of which are similar to ours. Likewise, Homer's "story of Odysseus's difficulties... middle of paper ...... relates to it under controlled circumstances" (Shearer). If children learn myths knowing that they are not true, it helps more than it hinders. Children will know that the information is not true and therefore will not give it much importance. Myths would not have a very great effect on religion, but it is a way of learning. Mythology is an important part of literature and also teaches culture. It's an interesting and enjoyable read, showing you how people thought when there were no other explanations for how things worked. Myths show the values and reasons of the people of their respective times and how they lived. Myths from cultures other than Greek are also important for these reasons. Knowing the myths does not necessarily mean trusting and believing in them. Mythology is something that should be taught to people of all kinds.
