Al Capone is one of America's most feared and best-known gangsters and the greatest symbol of the failure of law and order in the United States during the period of Prohibition 1920s. Alphonse Capone was born on January 17, 1899 in Naples, Italy. He and his family later immigrated to the United States. They settled in Brooklyn, New York (“Capone, Alphonse”). Al Capone was a ruthless, violent and horrible gangster. He was very organized and concerned about his high income. In the 1920s and 1930s, Capone was the most important leader of organized crime (Mayo). After moving to Brooklyn, New York, in the fourth grade, he became a member of the Five Point Gang. Johnny Torrio was also a member of this gang. In the late 1920s, Torrio moved to Chicago while Capone followed him and became known as the gang's lieutenant ("Capone, Alphonse"). During the 1920s, Prohibition came into force, Torrio and Capone entered the illegal alcohol market (Mayo). Capone was trying to hide his gang affiliation as a used furniture dealer ("Capone, Alphonse"). Capone was later arrested in New York for disorderly conduct. He had also murdered two men but could not be found guilty. Capone sent a member of a rival gang to the hospital. Capone then went to Chicago to calm things down ("Gangsters"). By the end of 1922, Capone was Torrio's number two. He later became full-time in gambling, saloons and brothels ("Gangsters"). Torrio was later shot and killed by a rival gang member and he subsequently decided to leave Chicago. Capone then becomes the leader of the Chicago Outfit (“Gangsters”). In the 1930s, Capone expanded his property. He controlled bookmakers, distilleries, breweries, racetracks, racetracks, gambling houses and nightclubs.
