Nineteenth Century Women: Sarah Stickney EllisThe industrialization of the 19th century was a tremendous social change that Britain first took the lead in. For the middle class, this meant a new openness to change that has been going on for generations. Sex and gender roles became one of the main concerns of many people during this Victorian period. Sarah Stickney Ellis was a writer who argued that it was the religious duty of women to improve society. Ellis felt that domestic chores were not the only tasks that women should focus on and so wrote a book called "The Women of England". The lead document in Sarah Stickney Ellis's 'The Women of England' examines how a change in attitude is sorely needed in the way women were viewed in the 19th century. Today, women have the freedom to educate themselves and make their own career choices. She covers a range of topics to help her readers cultivate their “highest attributes” as pillars of family life. First, Sarah Stickney Ellis was born in 1812 in Yorkshire, England. She was a profound writer who wrote many books about women and gender roles. She was the second wife of missionary William Ellis, a missionary and writer. During his life, he wrote numerous books dealing with his experiences during his missionary years.
