Within today's sporting community, certain aspects of sport and its practices promote and construct the idea that sport in general is dominated by women. men. Female athletes are regularly perceived as mediocre compared to their male equivalents (Lenskyj, 1998). Athletic success is generally established through demonstrations of strength, speed and endurance. Men generally set the standards in these areas, and as a result, women rarely reach the level set by top male athletes. Because of this, the media demonstrates a significant bias towards men's sports while we are poorly informed about the accomplishments of the women's sports community. On the rare occasions when a female athlete makes an appearance in the media, it is quite possible that the images and videos used depict her in a sexually objectified manner (Daniels and Wartena, 2011). This portrayal of female athletes may lead men to focus solely on the athlete's sexual assets, assumed to be their athletic abilities (Daniels & Wartena, 2011).
