Essay / Punishment in Dante's Inferno - 865
In this seventh circle of hell, there were three ring zones with three types of punishment. Sins were about violence which was violence against others, violence against oneself and violence against God. In my opinion, Dante was successful in employing the Christian world based on the difference in punishments. For example, the punishment of the first ring of the Seventh Circle of Hell was to boil the sinner in a river of blood to the one who preyed on the next one. In the second ring of the Seventh Circle of Hell, sinners transformed themselves into a tree and received the pain of the sinner who opposed themselves. In the final ring of the Seventh Circle of Hell, the punishment for sinners was the desert of burning sand and fire for sinners who opposed God. There was also Brunetto Latini who was guilty of his love, because he was homosexual. He was writing in literature about sodomites, so he was against God and nature. This meeting showed the theories of the Christian framework and the deep understanding of Christian belief. Moving on to the next circle of Hell, Virgil and Dante entered the eighth circle of Hell, known as Malebolge "Evil Pouches". There were ten pockets of this circle, and each pocket represented each type of crime and punishment. Additionally, Dante describes the eighth circle of hell as a large structure with walls, pits, and bridges. Through this circle, I think the author described hell as a city, because hell is made up of walls, architecture, and all kinds of people. In canto XXXIII, there was Mgr Ruggieri who was against Ugolina. They were punished by having their entire bodies frozen, except for their heads, on the surface of the lake in the second ring of the ninth circle of hell. The reason why Ugolina and Ruggieri went to hell is because Ruggieri imprisoned Ugolina and her two sons and grandson. Most importantly, Dante wants to show readers that humanity's capacity for evil and cruelty
