  • Essay / Richtariks Haunted Tale - 1798

Chapter 1On a farm 7 miles south and 1 mile east of Crete was a meadow. In this meadow, there had never been any buildings on the ground or animals herded inside the fences. In the middle of the meadow there was a wetland from which wildlife stayed away. The wetland was QUICKSAND! It wasn't the typical quicksand you see in movies where a person walks on and slowly sinks into the mud. It really was quicksand. If you got out, you fell underground into a murky underwater path of cold, dark water. There was nothing to hold on to and if you stepped on it, you didn't have time to grab anything. If you fell in, the best thing to do was to raise your hand and wave it and hope that someone would put a branch in the water so you could pull yourself out of the quicksand. A recently married husband and wife lived on a farm. down the hill and a little towards Crete. They owned the farm and the meadow at the top of the hill. The wife was a teacher in Béatrice and the husband worked at the Moulin in Crete. Don and Violet were the farmers who farmed and cut hay on this farm since 1965. The meadow had lush green grass with native flowers and grasses. These are the herbs that Native Americans saw 175 years ago. The ground was pristine with one exception. There was a large rock about 20 feet from the quicksand. The farmer, Don, had to swerve to cut the hay. If Donnie didn't get around the rock enough, he would snag his disc on the rock. He had to have his disc sharpened several times because the rock had damaged the end disc. The farmer spoke to the owner and asked if the very large pink stone could be removed from the meadow. Gary said he would try to move the rock with his ...... middle of paper ...... row from their birdbath. The house still stood strong and reflected his spirit.Chapter 5The woman could see the lights of Gary's truck returning in the darkness as his truck crawled up the hill. The woman was wondering whether to run or stand. She wondered if her husband always drove so slowly or if the light beings were slowing him down. A strange fog was creeping in. The fog seemed unnatural for this time of year. It was too dry to have fog. The woman wondered if she was losing her mind. Gary was finally heading towards the meadow. The glowing shapes were between her and the truck. The woman remained motionless. Eventually the lights hit the whitish shapes and the woman realized that the shapes she thought were ghosts were actually plastic bags floating in the wind. Gary jumped out of the truck and said to his wife, "You look like you saw a ghost, what's up ??”
