''in Just-''Analysis of the poemWhat is a year without spring? Spring is one of the most majestic occasions of the year. It is in spring that plants and flowers bloom with heavenly colors and fragrant smells. In spring, children run around in their yard, giggling. They play games in the nice weather during this perfect time of year. The sun's shine is brighter than ever now that winter has passed for a few weeks. In the poem "in Just-", EE Cummings creates a realistic moment of spring using elements of imagery, alliteration, and tone to reveal that spring is more glorious when you look at it from the perspective of a child. Cummings does this in order to appreciate individuals who apprehend with compassion and affection the beauty of spring (Smelstor, Marjorie). EE Cummings begins the poem with very clear and detailed imagery so that the reader can visualize the entire poem as if they were within the stanzas themselves. Cummings states in the poem “when the world is muddy/succulent, the lame little balloon man/whistles far and small” (lines 1-6). Cummings addresses the word mud-luscious (line 2) to convey to the reader the change in season from winter to spring. Now that the snow has melted, the land has turned into an abundant area of mud that, through the eyes of a child, would see this as something extraordinary and be excited about what is to come. The reader interprets the word, as a teenager would say, to feel more like a child in spring.
