This assignment will describe some of the ways that young children learn, it will also identify some of the key areas of learning and the characteristics of an effective program; it will also describe the understanding role of practitioners in supporting young children in the program. The curriculum area that will be reviewed is the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum (EYFS) and the key area of learning will be communication, language and literacy. , focusing more on literacy (writing). Some of the key features of young children's learning in the area of writing include books, mark making, flash cards, painting, magnetic letters, puppets, storytelling, singing role play, etc. Ferreiro and Teberosky (1982) carried out a study which showed that young children mainly use the marking technique to communicate through written language and thus represent spoken language. (Anonymous 2014) The Equality Act (The Equality Authority, 2000) has implications for assessment policy in early childhood education settings. In particular, this requires schools to be aware of the effects of context, culture and language in assessing children's learning and development. (Anonymous, 2014)The concept of curriculum as socially organized knowledge is an essential starting point. The way knowledge is codified and its status is traditionally linked to the values and power bases of dominant cultural groups (Young 1999). Literacy development involves encouraging children to connect sounds and letters and a wide range of reading materials (books, poems, and other written materials) to spark their interest.
