Essay / The Benefits of Naps - 1270
What do people think of when they first hear the word nap? Daily sayings such as take a nap, get caught napping, doze off, or steal forty winks are all beneficial daily activities that we need to add to our busy lives. If we do this, we will be more awake and able to reach our full potential as an individual. People don't realize how important a nap can be. Although popular beliefs suggest that naps are a waste of time, naps actually increase productivity by resting the brain. Napping Basics In order to fully reap the benefits of napping, there are certain “rules” that must be followed. Following these guidelines will ensure maximum effectiveness. One condition is that naps are taken in the early afternoon. Naps can interfere with nighttime sleep if taken after 4 p.m. (Jacobs). They should also be short. Research suggests taking a fifteen to thirty-five minute “nap.” This is the time needed for the body to rest and allow the neurons in the brain to recover (“Unknown benefits”). A comfortable environment is an important part of a good nap. Clothing, from ties to shoes, should be loose-fitting and, if possible, naps should be taken in an uninterrupted location. Thoughts should be directed towards relaxing activities, “no pressure” thoughts. It's also important not to feel pressure to fall asleep. If the brain needs rest, sleep will come (“Mental Rejuvenation”). EDIT Famous Nappers Many great figures throughout history have used nap necessities to perfection. Winston Churchill was one such person. He found naps imperative: “You need to sleep between lunch and dinner, and no half-way measures.” Take off your clothes and get into bed.
