Essay / Beowulf: Hero's Battles Against Evil - 1028
In this book, Beowulf is responsible for the deaths of three monsters. Grendel, who is a demon-like man who kills for pleasure. Grendel's mother who lives in a lair protecting her treasure. And finally the battle that kills Beowulf, the dragon. All of these battles take place in different settings and have their own unique attributes that make them special. Beowulf was a hero, he helped villages get rid of the beasts that ravaged their lands. Beowulf never fought any of his battles for wealth or treasure, his motivation for fighting these monsters was glory. Beowulf is the hero of the country and he fights against all the evils that trouble the kingdom. The first monster Beowulf must defeat is the evil creature Grendel. This battle, she is furious and promises her son that whoever is responsible will pay. When Grendel's mother emerges from the lake, she is on her way to Heorot. She is trying to find Beowulf so she can kill him. Beowulf is captured by Grendel's mother and she attempts to kill Beowulf but fails to penetrate his powerful armor. As she takes him into the lake, sea monsters destroy all the armor Beowulf had to protect himself. Beowulf tries to swing his sword at her head but it fails to penetrate her. Beowulf suddenly remembers the reputation he has and begins to fight with his bare hands. As they fight he spots an old ancient sword, it is the weapon he killed Grendel's mother with. Beowulf notices that with each battle, his strength is no longer what it used to be. Nevertheless Beowulf explores his cave and finds Grendel's body. He cuts off her head to take further revenge. When he swims towards the surface of the lake, he is greeted joyfully by all his warriors. When King Hrothgar learns of the battle, he praises Beowulf and tells him that he is a great man of courage and honor. The village is at peace again and they celebrate as another monster has been killed.
