For the purposes of this essay, this scholar will focus on an article that discusses population in the news. It is this researcher's intention to discuss the topic in this article and specifically highlight statistical information related to his findings. According to a January 12, 2012 New York Times article by Sabrina Tavernise, there is a growing perception of class tensions between the rich and the poor due to income inequality. This opinion arises from the results of a survey conducted in early December last year. The main idea of this article was to convey the message that there is a growing perception of class tensions between the rich and the poor due to income inequality. The author's conclusion is based on a comparison of income inequality with other societal issues such as race relations, illegal immigration, and young versus old. According to a definition of class consciousness found on the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary web page, class consciousness is being "actively aware of one's common status with others in a particular economic or social level of society." (Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary, n.d.). Additionally, class conflict exists when tensions or antagonisms arise in society due to competing socio-economic interests between people of different classes. To illustrate, Claire Reynolds, editor of MultiEthnic Literature of the United States at the University of Connecticut, said: "The current economic pressures on working-class and middle-class Americans indicate that class and conflict have certainly not been resolved. In fact, they might be intrinsic to our society. (Reynolds, 2008, p. 527). In short, this researcher's opinion is that...... middle of article...... and using a good estimate of the population parameter. The main purpose of using statistics is to facilitate the evaluation of the validity of one's conclusions. Works Cited Reynolds, CE (2008). Classes and conflicts in the United States.
