Essay / 1984 Summer Assignment - 1093
Title: 1984Author: George Orwell Setting:The time period is an alternate year of 1984. Since the book was written in 1949, it is the future according to Orwell. Winston lives in Oceania, formerly known as London. The country of Oceania consists of several continents and countries which for us are the British Isles, North and South America, the Atlantic Islands, Australia and Africa. In this alternate future, freedom is something that no longer seems to exist. Main Characters: Winston Smith – The protagonist of the story. Winston Smith works as a clerk in the Records Department of the Ministry of Truth, where his task is to rewrite historical documents. This involves editing newspaper articles and falsifying photographs, primarily to eliminate "non-persons", people who have been victims of the party. Because of his proximity to the mechanisms for rewriting history, Winston Smith harbors doubts about the Party and its monopoly on the truth.Julia - Julia enthusiastically participates in the Two Minutes of Hate directed against Emmanuel Goldstein. Winston Smith, a colleague at the Ministry of Truth, is both excited and disgusted by Julia and dreams of raping and then killing her. Winston also fears that Julia is a member of the thought police. O'Brien - Protagonist Winston Smith, living in a dystopian society ruled by the Party, feels strangely attracted to O'Brien, a member of the Inner Party. Winston suspects that O'Brien is secretly opposed to the Party. Eventually, O'Brien addresses Winston with some suggestive remarks that seem to confirm Winston's suspicions. Winston finds the courage to approach him and openly declares himself an enemy of the totalitarian state. Winston's intuition seems correct: O'Brien presents himself as a member of the "Brotherhood" seeking to overthrow the Party.Big Brother - Big Brother is the enigmatic dictator of Oceania. In the society described by Orwell, everyone is under the total surveillance of the authorities. This constantly reminds people of the phrase “Big Brother is watching you,” which is the fundamental “truth” of this state’s propaganda system. In the novel, it is unclear whether Big Brother is a man or an image fabricated by the Party. In a book supposedly written by rebel Emmanuel Goldstein, it is written that no one has ever seen Big Brother. Its function is to act as a focal point for love, fear and respect. Emmanuel Goldstein - In the novel, Goldstein is rumored to be a former high-ranking member of the ruling party who split early of the movement and created an organization known as "The Brotherhood", dedicated to the downfall of the Party.
