  • Essay / Similarities Between Frankenstein and Dorian Gray

Shelley and Wilde discuss how easy it is for a person to be influenced to commit monstrous acts towards society due to a lack of approval from those that matter. “The Creature makes us sympathize with it because it only wants to be loved by one of its own. Dorian Gray captures our sympathy throughout the book because he is just an ordinary young child who is corrupted by Lord Henry and ultimately has his life ruined” (Andrew). Victor Frankenstein and Lord Henry Wotton fail in their creations. They show no love to creations or give them the adoration necessary for anyone to feel accepted. This not only leads to creations becoming monstrous, but it also makes creators look monstrous due to their failure. Creations become monstrous, because of the monstrous creators who influence them. Shelley and Wilde show that monsters are created by surrounding influences.
