  • Essay / To All Potential Terrorists By Naomi Shihab Nye - 714

Nye says: “I am humbled by my country's pain and I am furious. » (169) Nye feels like her country has failed her by showing global terror, but she knows her country is full of good neighbors. People see Middle Easterners as enemies who cause more suffering in our own country than they should be. Racism affects a lot of people and it seems like everyone is a little bit racist. The smallest things can affect the way we think and see the world. Your parents have a big influence on how you think critically. Nye talks about his father and says "there is no one like him and there are thousands like him - nice Arab dads who make everyone around the table laugh" (169). This shows how one views his family as the people he bases his judgments on and how he perceives the world around him. It is your parents who have the most influence on you because they raise you by teaching you how to live. If your parents teach you hatred towards a certain race, it is not normal, it creates racism. If you grew up hating a certain ethnicity, religion, or country, you simply won't be able to change that person's attitude.
