During the Great Depression, people went to the movies to clear their minds and temporarily forget things. Life was described in different ways during the Great Depression. Different genres of films give different perspectives on life. The three genres compared are comedy, gangster and musical films. Room Service and Modern Times are both films in the comedy genre and depict a carefree lifestyle. The Public Enemy is a gangster movie and his lifestyle was dangerous. Last but not least, 1933's Gold Diggers is a rather joyful film. These films all had one thing in common, however: the characters all had money problems, which has a lot to do with the Great Depression. Room Service was released in 1938 and starred the Marx brothers and Lucille Ball. It is a comedy film produced by RKO and the director was William Seiter.
