  • Essay / Reasons to blame others for our actions or inactions...

I agree that we all have a choice and that blaming others for our actions or inactions is wrong. However, this statement appears to be an oversimplification. One of the problems with this statement is that it assumes that everyone believes they have the freedom to choose, which is not always the case. Soldiers learn that they must follow orders. This is drilled into their heads throughout basic training. Following orders is supposed to keep things running smoothly and people safe, even when soldiers don't agree with the orders given. The men who participated in the events at Abu Ghraib prison may have felt that they did not have the freedom to make a choice. They were following orders, exactly as they had been trained to do. Most soldiers don't even think about the orders they are given, they just follow them. In a way it's almost robotic and it's clear that critical thinking is not part of following orders. The statement also assumes that the person making the choice understands what is right and what is wrong. A service member could also make an immoral choice while believing they are making a moral choice because of their training. They are trained to believe that disobedience can result in injury, court martial, loss of rank, or even dishonorable discharge. This makes them very vulnerable to fallacious arguments appealing to their fear. The fear of the men working at Abu Ghraib prison could have been for themselves or for others. Military personnel at the prison were dealing with men suspected of being or possessing information about terrorist activities. The soldiers involved may have believed that it was possible to get these men to speak by any means possible... in the middle of a newspaper... without a doubt. We have the power to think critically, but we fail to use it. We allow someone else to take charge of our decisions. In a sort of ironic twist, we make a choice by failing to make one. I believe that in a perfect world, we would all know that we have a choice and that we would all be able to make the right moral choice, regardless of anything else. . Unfortunately, we don't live in a perfect world. Sometimes we feel like our hands are tied, even though that's not the case, and sometimes we allow ourselves to be manipulated by other people. There are also times when we let our emotions dictate our actions, when we should think critically about our choices. Ultimately, the only thing that is true is that making choices can be difficult and when people appeal to our fears or other emotions, they can easily lead us astray if we let them...
