This article explores five articles that report on the use of marijuana (cannabis) to treat various medical conditions in children. A study conducted by Stanford University found that cannabis may contain compounds that have very specific health benefits. Recently, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved two clinical trials to evaluate the effectiveness of cannabidiol (CBD, the non-psychoactive ingredient in cannabis). Both trials will take place at New York Medical School and the University of California, San. Francis. Currently, 20 states allow medical cannabis use, 2 of the 20 states, Connecticut and Illinois, do not allow children to use medical cannabis. Parents Say “Yes” to Marijuana For years, we have been taught to say “No” to drugs, even marijuana. Marijuana is made from the dried flowers and leaves of a plant called Cannabis Sative. These dried leaves and flowers are said to cause coordination disorders, difficulty thinking and problem solving, and disruptions in learning and memory (marijuana). So why are parents lining up to have access to this plant to treat their sick children? Should these parents be considered radicals or simply desperate parents looking for options? Currently, 20 states allow medical cannabis, 2 of the 20 states, Connecticut and Illinois do not allow children to use medical cannabis. Even though these 18 states allow children to use cannabis for medical purposes, parents of these children face another obstacle: supply. Some of these states have only one dispensary and do not produce enough to supply everyone (Parker, 2013). Many families... middle of paper ... and the government should not be the one making these decisions for these parents. They are not medically trained professionals. I understand that we are dealing with children and someone has to protect their rights, but who is to say that the government is right. Let's take a look at all the anti-epileptic drugs available for children, the side effects are sometimes worse than the disease itself. The company finds it appropriate to prescribe these medications because they have been approved by the FDA or because they are prescribed by a doctor. Marijuana gets a bad rap because people use it to get high, but if it has helped so many people, why not think again about it for its medicinal purposes. Again, no side effects have been reported from using CBD. So once again I ask whether these parents should be considered radicals or just desperate parents looking for options..
