    One of the reasons why the family has become more complex is secularization which has led people to be more accepting of homosexuality, which means that there are now homosexual families. Additionally, laws passed regarding homosexuality, such as the Sexual Offenses Act 1967, which decriminalized same-sex relations for those over 21, also made homosexuality more accepted throughout society . Secularization has also meant that it is easier to divorce and there is no pressure for people to marry. Therefore, single-parent families are more likely to exist, with single-parent families generally being matrifocal. Both of these phenomena have led to the decline of nuclear/traditional families. There has been a steady increase in the number of single parent families with dependent children since 2001. In 2001 there were 1.7 million single parents with dependent children, in 2011 there were 2 million single parents with children dependent, according to the Office of National Statistics (Families). and households,
