  • Essay / Ideological differences between Oceania's parties in...

Life in Oceania is somewhat confusing and difficult to follow. When you start the book 1984, it is difficult to understand the life that people live in Oceania. As you go through the book, you begin to understand people's lives and how trapped they are. As you read the book, you also begin to understand the three different parties in Oceania and how they work. The Inner Party is the high class party with all the luxury. They are barely monitored by TV screens and practically control Oceania. The Outer Party is larger than the Inner Party, but they are watched at all times by television screens and are pretty much the working class, but somewhat poor and only having what they need to survive. If some members of the Outer Party are considered too intelligent or unloyal to Big Brother, they become non-persons. The Proles have the largest number of people and are not watched by TV screens at all and are considered free people with very little money. This information does not necessarily tell us what the ideological and thematic difference is between the parties and what is the main thing that differentiates them. The ideological and thematic difference between the parties is that they all have different beliefs in Big Brother, who controls them and who is the highest power in Oceania. When first analyzing difference and parties, one must first look at the inner party. and what they do. The Inner Party is Big Brother and the Inner Party controls Oceania. This seems a bit confusing, but after analyzing the information, it's pretty obvious that the Inner Party runs the government and there is no real person named "Big Brother." On page 259 of the 1984 book, there is a conversation...... middle of paper...... beliefs in Big Brother, who controls them and who is the highest power in Oceania. The Inner Party is Big Brother while the Proles don't really have to worry much about Big Brother but just need to show minor patriotism. The Outer Party must love, follow and do whatever Big Brother tells them to do. Big Brother is not a real person like Winston, Julia or O'Brien, but this idea of Big Brother or government based on this idea of Big Brother works for the government. Obviously this government is wrong and not right, but it works and allows the party to maintain control for a long time. Works Cited Glover, Beaird. “1984.” Masterplots, fourth edition (2010): 1-3.
