Tourette SyndromeTourette syndrome is one of several tics typically first diagnosed during infancy, childhood, or adolescence. Tics can be distinguished from each other based on duration, variety of tics, and age of onset. Tourette syndrome lasts more than 12 months. The estimated incidence of Tourette syndrome varies widely, but is probably four to five individuals per 10,000. It occurs two to three times more frequently in men. There are undoubtedly a number of other students with symptoms who have not been diagnosed. When diagnosed and treated early, many of the learning, emotional and social disabilities they cause can be alleviated or treated more effectively. The goal of any program for someone with Tourette syndrome is to help them learn and interact productively in school and in society. Toruette syndrome is a multiple tic disorder, with motor and vocal tics present, but not necessarily simultaneously, that begins in childhood. and it is a permanent illness that seems to change in its manifestations and intensity. The cause of Tourette syndrome is unknown. The fundamental defect is thought to be a biochemical abnormality of the cerebral ganglia.Diagnosis1.
