William Golding was the author of Lord of the Flies, a book which is still very controversial today in that Golding showed British schoolchildren resorting to savagery and total barbarism, feasting on almost raw pork and fighting; Its demonstration of how humanity has evil within each of us, no matter how deeply hidden it may be. Jean Jacques Rousseau is the author of Dissertation on the origin and foundation of the inequality of humanity. These two controversial books presented the author's views on humanity and society. Golding believed that humans in nature are evil and it is society that tames this beast. Rousseau disagrees and believes that society is what taints humans, and that humans are naturally good and strong in spirit. I believe Rousseau is correct in believing that society is what taints humans and makes them greedy and selfish for power, destroying what we have left of common sense and rational decision-making.
