Essay / Argumentative Essay on Gymnastics Classes - 1088
Cases show that gymnastics classes help students achieve greater educational and personal success. A study presented at the American College of Sports Medicine asked fourth and fifth graders to run or exercise in other ways for at least ten minutes. While these students ran and exercised, other fourth and fifth graders remained in the classroom and sat quietly. After ten minutes, all students took a math test. The group of students who exercised or ran for ten minutes before the exam performed significantly better and performed better on their exam than the group of students who sat quietly indoors before the exam (“Gym Help Students”). This study shows that physical activity during the school day goes hand in hand with better grades and achievement. Another study was conducted to try to prove or disprove whether being in shape after gym class has anything to do with better performance in school. This study was published in the Journal of Pediatrics and was conducted among children and students in Nebraska. 12,000 students participated in the study. Each student's fitness was measured using items such as a timed run and the student's body mass index. Then, they measure each student's academic achievement in English and math based on state standardized test scores. Being in better physical shape was associated with significantly higher test scores. However, a student's height does not appear to have any influence on whether or not they do well on their tests. Students who were overweight but still fit and physically active had higher test scores than students who were lighter but were not fit or physically active (“Gym Help Students”). When students pass more fitness tests, they appear to be able to perform better on standardized and general tests. Students
