On June 5, 1945, Germany lost the Second World War. The Allied Powers of the USA, UK and USSR won. They decided to divide Germany into four different zones: one for the United States, the United Kingdom, the USSR and France. The city of Berlin was also divided into four zones. Unfortunately, the city of Berlin was right in the middle of the Russian zone, surrounded by Russian-controlled land and waterways. When differences and disagreements arose with the Soviet Union, Stalin would attempt to use Berlin to force the other allies to accept his vision of the future. The Berlin Blockade and subsequent Berlin Airlift were caused by political and economic differences between the United States and its allies and the Soviet Union and how they wanted to treat Germany after World War II worldwide. Even though the unrelated states, the UK and the USSR were allies. during World War II, they would soon become enemies. In 1945, Stalin, Churchill and FDR met in Yalta to discuss post-war Europe.
