Greed has gripped human beings since the existence of human civilization. This is one of the main reasons why our world is the way it is today. Many of the past problems were caused by the human nature of greed. Guy De Maupassant, the author of "The Necklace", perfectly shows how greed can lead to bad outcomes in the short story. Guy De Maupassant, one of the fathers of the short story, was born on August 5, 1850. A quote representative of Maupassant's legacy "French writer of short stories and novels of the naturalist school who is by general opinion the greatest French short story writers "(Bennet). In his short story “The Necklace,” Maupassant focuses primarily on greed. He describes how greed will lead to downfall anyway and change people. At the beginning of the story, Matilda complains that she deserves a better life and that she should live a luxurious life. She is eventually invited to a ball and needs a piece of jewelry that would falsely represent her wealth. Mathilde eventually borrows a necklace, but loses it during the ball and spends years trying to raise the funds to replace the necklace. He was soon told that it was false and worthless. Maupassant was trying to show how the actions of women had a cruel effect on Maupassant's life. Guy De Maupassant develops his theme that greed can lead to downfall in his short story "The Necklace" through the use of foreshadowing, symbolism, and setting. In the short story “The Necklace,” the author uses foreshadowing to show that greed will lead to downfall. Foreshadowing is a literary device in which a writer gives an idea of what will happen later in the story. For example, when the necklace is loaned.
