Pressure can force people to commit deranged acts. When innocent people plead guilty or make incriminating statements, the main reason is that they feel guilty or know more inside information. There have been many cases in which an innocent person was secretly blackmailed or forced to plead guilty. The mental state of a confessor is also vital to knowing the truth. Confessions of minors are generally unreliable because most of the time they do not completely understand the situation and they can also be manipulated more easily than an adult. Mentally competent adults confess their innocence for a variety of reasons, exhaustion from excessive questioning, the belief that they might be released if they confessed, or because they truly feel guilty. Confessions obtained under pressure are less common, but there have been cases. False confessions pose a danger during trials and can also result in cruel punishment for an innocent person.
