During the Tang period, also considered the “Golden Age,” art and literature were embraced and flourished. During the Song dynasties, many technical inventions allowed China to develop as a nation and become one of the greatest nations in the medieval world. Both dynasties played key roles in Chinese history. The Tang Dynasty (618-906) succeeded the Sui Dynasty, which ruled from 581 to 618 AD respectively. The foundation for China's development, growth and expansion under the rule of the Tang Dynasty was laid during the rule of the Sui Dynasty. The political and governmental institutions of the Sui Dynasty greatly influenced the Tang directly. Diplomatic relations were successfully established during this period, and Tang China became one of the largest and most important empires in the medieval world. Retail traders, clerics, ambassadors, and convoys from Japan, Korea, Vietnam, and other countries became common members of Tang China's daily society. The rise of the Tang dynasty is similar to that of the Han dynasty, which began more than 800 years earlier. . The first emperor of Tang, Kao-tsu (618-626 CE), implemented many practices and ideas established during the Sui dynasty.
