    No matter how much we try to deny it, favoritism is a disease we are all born with. Since we were little, we have been persuaded to think that it is better to favor certain things over others; colors, music, or the most famous of all; Mom's love against Dad. These factors then have a big impact on how we develop as children. We try so hard to trick our subconscious into believing that we love everyone the same, when deep down we know that's not true. However, when you are a parent, it is important to emphasize that your love for each child is equal. When a parent makes it clear to their child that they have a favorite, this can begin to reflect on the child's behavior. “Only with words, people and love you move at ease;” (Nims, 572)Laura Tavares was born in 1995. From the day she came into the world, she was insulted by her mother. Being the first child, one might have thought, “she would be the most loved.” At the age of seven, there was a new baby in the house, Samuel. He was born prematurely and, aside from the verbal abuse, Laura began to be neglected. By age 10, she was obese and dressed like a middle-aged woman. Her mother made sure Laura knew her place as a slave in the family, waiting for Sammy bound hand and foot. Clearly, Laura knew she wasn't the favorite and she made it her goal to change that. She became a straight-A student and was known as the best dancer in our school. She lost weight and found a job where she earned over $1,000 a week. Meanwhile, she cleans a house that would eclipse the sun if she cleaned it again, all to win her mother's love. “I need a mother” – she constantly told me.
