For four years (1862-1865), a war opposed the Northern Union States and the Southern Confederate States over the question of slavery. During this time, many changes were occurring in the United States; the election of an anti-slavery president, the Southern states attempted to secede to become their own independent countries. These factors and many others, including slavery, were the main causes of the Civil War. At first, slavery was the main source of income for the Southern states. Many would say that tobacco or cotton were the main profits of the Southern states, but we can all agree that without slavery there would be no collection of these two products. Southern states would believe slavery was acceptable; they would do this by making people believe that "slavery advocates claimed that the sudden end of the slave economy would have had a profound and deadly economic impact in the South, where the use of slave labor was the foundation of their economy . The cotton economy would collapse. The tobacco crop would dry up in the fields. Rice would cease to be profitable. Slave owners sought a way to maximize the use of slaves. Eli Whitney thus created the cotton gin1. As this revolutionary machine increased cotton production, it required more slaves to work in the fields. At the same time, the Union states were more industrialized and did not require as much slavery as the Confederate states, which led to slavery being made unacceptable, thus making it illegal.
