Essay / Turkey Case Study - 1568
Turkey is known for its dominance in the textile industry. Several major brand clothes come from this country. Some of the well-known brands are Nike, Adidas and Hugo Boss, to name a few. Although the United States is aware of the popularity of these brands, it is not clear how poor the working conditions of the Turkish community are within this industry. The Textile, Knitting and Garment Workers' Union (TEKSiF) called working conditions "murderous."2 Wages paid in the Turkish garment industry are barely enough to survive. The World Fact Book reports that agriculture accounts for 25 percent of jobs.3 Of the remaining 75 percent of jobs, 40 percent are employed informally in the textile industry. Therefore, these types of difficulties can have serious consequences and devastation for people and their populations.
