In the 1830s, 1840s and beyond, there was a Second Great Awakening. The Second Great Awakening had a decisive impact on American society. In the following, I will describe what the Great Awakening was and how it changed life in America. In essence, the Great Awakening was a religious awakening. It started in the South. Tent camps were set up around busy meetings that lasted for days. These camp meetings were very moving and multitudes of people were filled with the Spirit of God. These meetings, sponsored primarily by Methodists, Baptists, and Presbyterians, served the social as well as the spiritual needs of the frontier. Since it was difficult for Baptists and Methodists to support local churches, they solved the problem by recruiting uneducated people to spread the word of God to their neighbors. The camp meetings ultimately encouraged “extended meetings” in local churches. In the North, we saw a different religious awakening. Reform was popping up all over the Northeast.
