  • Essay / Community Conservation and Energy Efficiency - 729

During this meeting, I will speak to my fellow homeowners about the energy conversation and efficiency in our community. Energy conservation is important because our world relies heavily on the use of non-renewable energy resources. Once these resources are exhausted, we will have to turn to alternatives. Rather than depleting the Earth of its natural resources, we can end it now, or at least slow it down. A more immediate solution to relying on alternatives is to conserve the energy we use by using less to complete daily tasks. Besides conserving energy, being energy efficient is an essential step we can take. With technological breakthroughs come breakthroughs in energy efficiency, such as vehicles with higher miles per gallon or MPG ratings, low-wattage light bulbs, and high-efficiency washers and dryers that use less water, detergent and electricity (Berg and Hager, 2007). Energy savings and efficiency not only help the environment but also your wallet. There are two types of energy: non-renewable and renewable. Non-renewable energy comes from sources such as oil, coal and natural gas. These sources come from Earth and are not replenished quickly enough for the world to depend on them forever (World Wildlife Fund, 2010). Renewable energy is obtained from sources that cannot be exhausted, such as wind or sun, thus minimizing environmental impact (NADA, 2010). There are many ways for us consumers to save energy. An inexpensive and easy-to-implement solution is to replace all light bulbs with low-wattage, energy-efficient bulbs that can be purchased wherever regular light bulbs are sold (Gordon, How to Go Green: Lighting, 2010).
