Dickinson refers to "the majority" as a society, this majority does not take women's literature seriously. The vast majority of good literature is composed by men and it is extremely rare for a woman to create a masterpiece. Dickinson's highly unusual writing style was her personal expression at its best. Her use of capital letters and hyphens was deemed unnecessary by many, but for her it was absolutely necessary to express emphasis. Unfortunately, she was unable to achieve recognition during her lifetime. When his poetry was first published, many changes were made to bring it up to today's standards. Little did anyone know that the true strength of his poetry lay in his unique style. It was not until her work was published in its original form that Dickinson began to be recognized as a pioneer. Dickinson writes "Asentiment - and you are of sound mind - Demur - you are immediately dangerous - And handled with a chain -" (Lines 5-7) If one were to conform to the norms, they would be considered normal.
